Dhokra Bronze Maskoids

Dhokra crafts are famous throughout India. Dhokra Metal Casting is a technique used by the West Bengal Dhokra Kamar Tribe (mainly in the districts of Bankura, Midnapore, Purulia and Burdwan), as well as in Jharkand, Orissa, and Chattisgarh. While called 'bronzes,' these objects are more often of bell-metal or brass. In this type of metal casting, a lost wax technique is used, also called hollow casting, in which a negative mold is formed by melting away sculpted wax inside of a form. Anklets, necklaces, and bangles, and small figures of gods and animals are all produced through this process, as are maskoids used as charms and decorative objects.
